‘ I dont care about social media abuse ‘ – Alex Iwobi

Nigerian footballer Alex Iwobi has revealed his resilience in the face of online abuse, emphasising that he remains unfazed by criticism directed at him after Nigeria’s loss in the Africa Cup of Nations final to Ivory Coast.

Iwobi is part of the Nigerian squad for international friendly games vs Ghana and Mali.

Following Nigeria’s defeat, Iwobi became a target of social media abuse, prompting him to delete all his previous Instagram posts as he bore the brunt of criticism from fans. Despite the onslaught, Iwobi remains resolute and unaffected by the negativity.

In his new Project 17 podcast, Iwobi addressed the issue, stating, “The whole competition I didn’t see it. I remember in a press conference they said, ‘Where is the creativity?’ and I had to address the role I was given and I said I am the kind of guy who will listen to my coach and try to do the job I’m told to do.”

Reflecting on past instances of online abuse throughout his career, including during his time at Arsenal and Everton, Iwobi remains steadfast in his approach, asserting, “It is what it is, it is not the first time…that is football. I would rather be off social media, I don’t want to see that and I don’t care.”

Despite returning to Instagram and occasionally sharing messages, Iwobi maintains a resilient stance against cyberbullying, condemning it while refusing to let it affect his life.

Iwobi’s unwavering attitude serves as a testament to his mental strength and determination to overcome adversity, both on and off the field
