I grew up watching him — Adrien Rabiot credits Super Eagles legend Taye Taiwo for Marseille move

Marseille’s newest signing, Adrien Rabiot, has revealed that his childhood admiration for Nigerian legend Taye Taiwo played a significant role in his decision to join the French club.

In an interview following his unveiling, the 29-year-old midfielder expressed his deep connection with the club, citing Nigeria’s Taye Taiwo as one of the players who shaped his early passion for Marseille.

Adrien Rabiot speaks about Taye Taiwo

“When I was younger, I loved watching Marseille play,” Rabiot said. “It was the era of players like Niang and especially Taye Taiwo. I admired his strength, his presence on the pitch, and his ability to score incredible goals from the left-back position. Watching him and others made me dream of one day wearing the same shirt.”

Rabiot, who had attracted interest from Premier League clubs and Turkish giants Galatasaray, ultimately chose to return to France, inspired by his memories of players like Taiwo. Taiwo’s time at Marseille was marked by his powerful left foot, blistering pace, and an unforgettable contribution to the club’s success.

Taye Taiwo joined Marseille in January 2005 and quickly became a fan favorite due to his impressive performances in defense and his ability to score crucial goals. During his six-year stint at the club, Taiwo helped Marseille win the 2010 Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de la Ligue in 2010 and 2011, and also made it to two Coupe de France finals.

Taiwo was known for his powerful free kicks and strong defensive presence. His performances earned him a spot in the Trophées UNFP Team of the Year multiple times and cemented his legacy as one of the club’s most celebrated left-backs.

Rabiot, now hoping to replicate some of that success, will bring his own experience from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain to De Zerbi’s side. He joins Marseille at a time when the club is looking to rebuild and challenge for silverware once again.
