‘ I want to stay with Super Falcons’ – Randy Waldrum announces after 2023 Women’s World Cup exit

Following his teams last-16 exit from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Super Falcons of Nigeria Head Coach Randy Waldrum has announced he wants to stay with the team.

Nigeria suffered a 4-2 penalty shoot-out loss to England in the last-16 but despite elimination are celebrated for an impressive showing at the tournament.

Having taken up appointment as Super Falcons Head Coach in 2020, Waldrum has built a strong team that went through the finished the World Cup without defeat in regulation time despite facing powerhouses Canada , Australia , Ireland and England.

In his post match interview after their last-16 exit, Waldrum was asked about his future on the Nigerian job, after what many will agree was a proud performance at the World Cup.

The American born Coach revealed his wish was to stay but like he acknowledged, the decision is not his to make.

“I am proud of my team. I want to stay with this team and continue working towards the Olympics. But that is not a matter for me to decide,” Coach Randy Waldrum said.

Prior to the tournament, the relationship between Waldrum and the Nigeria Football Federation – NFF suffered severe fracture as they engaged in verbal exchanges and name calling.

It remains to be seen, if the football federation will put behind the perceived differences to extend Randy Waldrum’s stay as Super Falcons Head Coach to prepare for the next big engagement, the Paris 2024 Olympic games.
