‘I was commited to guiding Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes back on course’ – Finidi George
Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George has clarified the reasons behind his unexpected resignation as head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team.
Finidi’s resignation was announced on Saturday, June 15, 2024 with Nigeria’s striker Victor Osimhen publicly criticizing moments later for questioning his commitment to the team.
In his resignation letter, Finidi explained that his resignation was due to the Nigerian Football Federation’s (NFF) decision to appoint a foreign Technical Adviser.
This move came after Nigeria’s disappointing results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, including a 2-1 loss to Benin and a 1-1 draw with South Africa.
Finidi wrote, “I am writing to inform you of my decision to step down as head coach of the Super Eagles. This decision is made in light of the recent changes to the team’s technical staff. Please be assured of my unwavering support for the team and I wish us all the best in the future.”
“While the recent qualifying results haven’t been ideal, I remained committed to guiding our World Cup qualification campaign back on course. Given the recent changes to the technical crew, I believe it’s time for me to step aside,” Finidi George stated.
Nigeria currently ranks fifth in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin leading the group, each with seven points.
2013 African champions, Nigeria have only managed to secure three points from four matches, leaving their qualification hopes in jeopardy.
