World number one Iga Swiatek closed out her 2022 Majors season with a comfortable win over Ons Jabeur in the final of the US Open. The 21-year-old from Poland showed her great quality to claim the victory at Flushing Meadows.
With Swiatek having won the French Open earlier this year, she was aiming to become only the second woman since Serena Williams in 2013 to win the US Open and French Open in the same year. Her opponent was the first African woman to reach two Grand Slam finals in a year, with the Tunisian having lost in the Wimbledon final earlier this year.
Swiatek showed her ruthless nature as she claimed the first set in only 29 minutes, showing Jabeur why she is the number one player in women’s tennis. The 21-year-old showed excellent control and poise on the court before following up her first set performance with another in the second set to win the match 6-2 7-6 in straight sets.
Iga Swiatek becomes the youngest woman to reach three Grand Slam titles since Maria Sharapova in 2008. She also becomes the first Pole to win the US Open title. Swiatek has smartly taken on the position of the best player in women’s tennis since the shock retirement of World number one Ashleigh Barty in March.
Both players will end the year as #1 and #2 in the women’s rankings after having impressed on tour.
