Igoh Ogbu’s club celebrates Super Eagles invitation

Igoh Ogbu is in line to make his long-awaited senior debut for Nigeria, the three-time African champions, SportsRation reports.

Six years after playing his last match for the Flying Eagles in the 2019 Fifa U20 World Cup against Senegal, the central defender has been named in the Super Eagles’ 39-man provisional squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria will play Rwanda and Zimbabwe in the upcoming matches.

Ogbu is up against other central defenders like William Troost-Ekong, Gabriel Osho, Calvin Bassey, Jordan Torunarigha, and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi for a place in the final squad.

The former Nigeria U20 player has earned his spot in the provisional squad thanks to his impressive performances for Slavia Prague in the Czech Republic’s Chance Liga.

Slavia Prague congratulated Ogbu on social media after reports suggested he could be included in the final squad for the World Cup qualifiers. They posted on Instagram: “Igoh Ogbu earns his first senior @ng_supereagles call-up! Nigeria will face Rwanda and Zimbabwe in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Congratulations, Iggy! We are so proud of you!”

Ogbu has impressed since joining Slavia Prague from Norwegian club Lillestrom in 2023. He has played 86 matches for the Czech side, scoring four goals and providing one assist.

Before joining Slavia Prague, he had stints at Gombe United, Rosenborg, Levanger, and Sogndal.
