Iheanacho, Olanrewaju on target as Super Eagles play part in mid-week European Club Competitions

Only Sanusi Zaidu played in UEFA Champions League

The European Club football returned in the midweek and a few of Super Eagles stars were in action.

Gone are the days when we have Super Eagles stars fighting for the most prestigious club trophy, the UEFA Champions League.

In fact, since John Mikel Obi won it with Chelsea in 2012 no Super Eagles players have ever come close to winning it.

And as it stands it might take a few years before any Super Eagles player come close to winning the title again after just one of our players was on the parade in the Tuesday-Wednesday games.

Porto’s Zaidu Sanusi and Dennis Emmanuel Bonaventure were the only Super Eagles player in action when the champions league kick started on Tuesday.

While the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Kayode Olanrewaju, Joe Aribo, Samuel Chukwueze, Leon Balogun, Chidera Ejuke were in action on Thursday in the Europa League games.

8. Sanusi Zaidu (Porto)

The second Super Eagles player playing in the UEFA biggest competition, the UEFA Champions League. He started for Porto in their 3-1 loss to Manchester City on Wednesday.

7. Chidera Ejuke

One cap Super Eagles winger, Chidera Ejuke needed just 45 minutes to match an UEFA Europa League record set in February 2020.

Ejuke who was subbed on in the 46th minutes in CSKA Moscow 1-1 draw against Wolfsberger AC at the Woertherseestadion tied a unique record in the clash.

He completed 11 dribbles against the Austrian club, his 11 successful drible was the most in a single game since February.

5-6. Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo (Rangers)

The Super Eagles duo were in action as Rangers maintained their unbeaten run on Thursday. Leon Balogun who didn’t play any part in Rangers 2-0 win against Celtics started this one.

Leon Balogun was on the pitch from the start to the end as Rangers secured a 2-0 away win against Standard Liege at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne.

Joe Aribo was subbed on in the 67th minute for George Hagi son Ianis Hagi and he was on the pitch for 27 minute as Steven Gerrard’s Rangers maintained their unbeaten run.

4. Samuel Chukwueze (Villarreal)

Chukweueze was on the pitch from the start to end as Villarreal secured a 5-3 win against Sivasspor.

3. Kayode Olanrewaju (Sivasspor)

Kayode Olanrewaju was in action for his Turkish club as they were beaten 5-3 in Spain by Villarreal.

He scored Sivasspor’s first goal as they planned a comeback but Samuel Chukwueze and his teammates ensured the secure all the points in the 8-goal thriller.

2. Emmanuel Dennis (Club Brugge’s)

Super Eagles attacker who is just one of the Super Eagles player participating in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League scored a goal in Club Brugge’s 2-1 win at Zenit.

1. Kelechi Ihenacho (Leicester City)

Kelechi Iheanacho was the star man for Leicester City on Thursday. The Nigerian assisted two goals and scored one as the English club secured a 3-0 win against Zorya.

The goal he scored was his 50th career goal.
