Imo Obot the hero as Enyimba FC beat Rivers United
Finidi George and Stanley Eguma facing their former teams may have dominated pre-match talks but it was Super Eagles B star Imo Obot who emerged the hero with a match-winning free-kick.
Enyimba has finally secured their first win in three matches, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Rivers United. This win came after a series of disappointing results and is only their second victory in the last nine games.
The game saw Imo Obot score a stunning free-kick in the first half, which proved to be the match-winner. The Rivers United goalkeeper could do nothing as Obot’s strike flew past him. Before the goal, Enyimba had shown early strength, but goalkeeper Ani made an important save to keep the score level.
Despite a strong push from both teams in the second half, Enyimba held on to their lead and took the win.
The match was significant as it saw two former Super Eagles legends, Finidi George and Nwankwo Kanu, face off as opposing coaches. Kanu is now the chairperson of Enyimba, while Finidi George manages Rivers United. Finidi had previously led Enyimba to their 9th NPFL title.
Obot’s free-kick was the standout moment, and goalkeeper Ani’s save was crucial in keeping Enyimba in the game. The strong fan support, encouraged by Kanu’s decision to open the gates for free entry, also played a big part in the team’s success.
Despite the win, Enyimba remains in 10th place in the NPFL, while Rivers United is in 3rd. Remo Stars are currently leading the league.
