Injury Concerns May Affect Akinsanmiro’s AFCON Chances
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle may be forced to adjust his midfield options for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as injuries continue to affect his plans. The coach recently named his provisional squad, which included several new faces, among them Pisa midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro.
The 21-year-old has enjoyed an impressive season in Serie A and has become an important player for his club. He was close to receiving a call-up for Nigeria’s last international break, but a shoulder injury kept him out and was expected to sideline him for up to six weeks.
Although Pisa hoped to have him back for their upcoming match against Parma, the young midfielder has not yet returned to full fitness. He has continued to train separately from the rest of the squad, which means he will need a late fitness test before he can be considered for Monday’s match.
Akinsanmiro’s situation raises doubts about his chances of making Nigeria’s final AFCON squad. Chelle has often been criticised for not selecting enough midfielders, and with some regulars struggling for form, the coach is expected to refresh the team ahead of the tournament.
Akinsanmiro could offer something new in midfield, but his injury may come at the wrong time. The final squad list is expected next week, giving the young midfielder very little time to prove he is fit and ready to contribute.
