Inter Beat Bayern 2-1 in First Leg of Champions League Quarter-Final
Bayern Munich will head to the San Siro for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final needing to come from behind, after losing 2-1 at home to Inter Milan on Tuesday night.
Both teams started the match cautiously, trying to understand each other’s style. Bayern’s Michael Olise almost opened the scoring early on, but his curling shot was pushed away by Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Inter then began to grow into the match, creating a few half-chances without really testing Bayern.
The first real effort on target came from Harry Kane, who couldn’t properly connect with an Olise cross, allowing Sommer to make an easy save. Raphaël Guerreiro later had a great chance to score after a clever pass from Olise, but once again Sommer was there to deny him.
Bayern were left to regret those missed chances when Lautaro Martínez scored a brilliant goal in the 38th minute, finishing smartly from the edge of the box after a clever flick from Marcus Thuram.
Bayern had more possession in the second half, but Inter defended well and looked dangerous on the break. Leon Goretzka made an important tackle to stop Martínez from scoring again after a quick Inter free-kick. Despite having more of the ball, Bayern struggled to break Inter down.
Manager Vincent Kompany made three substitutions with just under 20 minutes left, bringing on Thomas Müller, Serge Gnabry and Sacha Boey to try and change the game. The changes paid off when Müller equalised in the 85th minute, tapping in a low cross from Konrad Laimer at the back post.
But Inter hit back almost immediately. In the 88th minute, a fast counter-attack ended with Carlos Augusto setting up Davide Frattesi to score into an open goal, restoring Inter’s lead and giving them an advantage going into the second leg.
