Iwobi: Unity Driving Super Eagles’ Perfect AFCON Run

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has said strong unity and togetherness are the main reasons behind Nigeria’s perfect run at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria will face hosts Morocco in the semi-final on Wednesday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, after an impressive tournament so far.

The Super Eagles have won all five of their matches, scored 14 goals and set a new national record for goals in a single AFCON campaign. Wins against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Mozambique and Algeria have made Nigeria one of the clear favourites for the title.

Speaking ahead of the semi-final, Iwobi said the team’s success is built more on their bond off the pitch than on tactics.

“For me, I feel it is the family environment we have created, the brotherhood within the team. Everyone cares about how the other feels, we are united and all pushing in the same direction to make sure we succeed on the pitch,” he said.

The Fulham midfielder has played a key role in Nigeria’s midfield, as the team have shown both attacking quality and growing maturity.

Iwobi also believes the foundation for this strong run was laid at the last AFCON, where Nigeria reached the final with a young squad.

“From the previous AFCON where we performed very well, we were a bit young, but you realise now everyone is entering their prime and performing well both at club and the national team,” he added.

Nigeria’s goal tally in Morocco has already passed their previous best of 12 goals, set at the 2000 tournament.

Iwobi further explained that missing out on World Cup qualification has given the team extra motivation.

“I feel like everybody has this task ahead that we want to win every game. Obviously, we wanted to qualify for the World Cup, but it did not happen and we are trying to use that disappointment as a push factor for ourselves and our country,” he said.

Iwobi has also been sharing video diaries from the team’s camp, saying he wants fans to see the human side of the players.

“My intention was to control my narrative because everyone sees the football side, but I’m trying to show that we are equally human and have a fun side. There are lots of characters and personalities, but when we go to the pitch, we fight and make sure we give our best,” he said.

Nigeria will play Morocco on Wednesday evening, with the winner booking a place in Sunday’s AFCON final.
