World number one Jannik Sinner ended an incredible 2024 season by helping Italy defend their Davis Cup title with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands in Málaga, Spain.
Sinner secured the victory with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Tallon Griekspoor after Matteo Berrettini set the tone earlier, defeating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2 in the opening match.
This marked the first Davis Cup final for the Netherlands, but their dream ended in disappointment. The loss also coincided with the retirement of former doubles world number one Wesley Koolhof.
Sinner’s dominant year continued with his performance in the final. His powerful serves and precise shots were too much for Griekspoor to handle, despite the Dutchman putting up a strong fight in the first set.
“It’s been an amazing year, and I’m so proud of the team,” Sinner said after the win. “There’s a lot of hard work behind this, and we’re happy to hold this trophy again. It feels like we’re playing in Italy.”
The 23-year-old Italian’s achievements this year include eight singles titles, his first Australian Open and US Open wins, and finishing the year as the ATP world number one. With 70 ATP Tour wins, Sinner has solidified his status as the best player in the world.
Matteo Berrettini played a crucial role in Italy’s success, winning all six of his Davis Cup matches this season. Nicknamed “The Hammer,” Berrettini’s dominant display against van de Zandschulp showcased his resilience and skill, delivering 16 aces and converting three break points in just 76 minutes.
Berrettini’s efforts early in the match gave Italy an early edge and set the stage for Sinner to finish the job.
With this victory, Italy retains the Davis Cup trophy for the second year in a row, reinforcing their dominance in men’s tennis. For Sinner, Berrettini, and the rest of the Italian team, the win caps off a memorable year filled with hard work and triumph.
