Jo Bonfrère criticises Super Eagles’ poor World Cup qualifying campaign

Former Super Eagles coach Johannes Bonfrère has criticised Nigeria’s struggles in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, questioning the team’s ability to secure a spot in the tournament.

Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Uyo has put their qualification hopes in serious doubt. The Super Eagles now sit fourth in Group C with seven points, trailing South Africa (13 points), Rwanda (8 points), and Benin (8 points).

Bonfrère disappointed with Super Eagles’ performance

Speaking to Complete Sports from the Netherlands, Bonfrère expressed his disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to dominate teams they once easily defeated.

“How do you expect to qualify for the World Cup if you don’t win games?” Bonfrère asked. “In the past, if we didn’t beat Zimbabwe 3-0 or 4-0, the fans would throw stones at us.”

Despite having several players in top European leagues, Bonfrère believes the team’s recent performances are unacceptable.

“A 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe is embarrassing. I don’t see how they can qualify for the World Cup unless they make it through the playoffs,” he added.

Nigeria’s qualification hopes in jeopardy

With automatic qualification looking increasingly difficult, Nigeria now faces a tough battle to secure a World Cup spot.

The Super Eagles must improve their performances in the remaining qualifiers to avoid missing back-to-back World Cups.
