John Obi Mikel names Rodri the ‘Best Player in the World’
Nigerian football legend John Obi Mikel has praised Manchester City’s and Spain’s Rodri as the “best player in the world” following his standout performance at Euro 2024.
Mikel, who had a distinguished career with Chelsea and the Super Eagles, expressed his admiration for the holding midfielder on his recent podcast.
Rodri was instrumental in Spain’s perfect run at Euro 2024, leading them to a record fourth European Championship title. His role was crucial in Manchester City’s historic fourth consecutive Premier League win under Pep Guardiola.
Despite being forced off early in the Euro 2024 final due to injury, Rodri was named Player of the Tournament, further proving his importance to both club and country.
Mikel’s praise came in a podcast episode shared on YouTube, where he said, “The best player I think for me, in my opinion in the world now is Rodri.”
Rodri, however, remained modest about the acclaim, stating, “I would like for a Spaniard to win it, I don’t care who,” and acknowledged the merit of his teammate Dani Carvajal, another Ballon d’Or contender.
Rodri’s impressive performances and Spain’s Euro 2024 success have certainly positioned him as a leading candidate for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
