Jokic makes history as he is named 2020/21 NBA MVP

Becomes first player from Denver Nuggets to win award

Denver Nuggets Center Nikola Jokic has been named as the Most Valuable Player in the 2020/21 NBA season, warding off competition from Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry and Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid after his brilliant performance helped his Denver Nuggets side to reach the playoffs.

Jokic averaged 26.4 points per game, 10.8 rebounds per game and 8.3 assists per game for the Denver Nuggets in the NBA this season. The 26-year-old Serbian ranked in the top 5 in the league for total points, total rebounds and total assists in a stellar season. He is only the third man in the history of the NBA to average at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in an entire season, after Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook. Jokic, who was the 41st pick in the 2014 draft, has also made history as the lowest draft pick ever to win MVP in the league. He is also the first MVP to play every game of a season since Kobe Bryant achieved this feat 13 years ago. He becomes only the 6th player born outside of the United States of America to win the MVP award.

Jokic and the Denver Nuggets are in the Conference semifinals, where they have lost their first game to the Phoenix Suns. The MVP will now lead his team to their remaining playoff games as they look to win the 2020/21 NBA title.
