Jordi Alba, Barcelona agree to terminate contract after 11 seasons

FC Barcelona defender Jordi Alba has reached an agreement with the club to terminate his contract after 11 seasons at the club, becoming the third club captain to leave the club this season.

Alba, who joined the Catalan club from Valencia in 2012, has agreed to terminate his contract with the club with one year left on his current deal in order to help resolve the club’s financial crisis.

Alba agreed to defer the salaries owed to him by the club to help the club beat down its wage bill to fit with the league’s wage structure. The left-back will assess his options at the end of the season to find a new club ahead of next season.

Jordi Alba has played 458 appearances for the club with 27 goals and 99 assists to his name, and won 18 titles with the club. The 34-year-old defender joins Gérard Pique and Sergio Busquets in leaving the club this season as the club continues to trim its wage bill.
