Jordon Ibe: From rejecting Nigeria to training at Chesterfield – a sad tale

The story of former Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe who once rejected a chance to play for the Nigerian national team now training with Chesterfield is a sad tale.

Sad because at some point in his career, Ibe was held in comparison with Chelsea and England winger Raheem Sterling.

Both ex-kops were touted as potential Three lions of England first-teamers, reason Ibe now 27, turned down opportunity to play for his father’s country Nigeria.

Things have not gone according to plan for Ibe and so his England dreams have been rolled away just like his mention around major news circles like during his days at Liverpool, Bournemouth and even Derby County.

His last deal was with Turkish club Adanaspor. That deal failed to yield a single appearance.

Recent reports in England show Ibe is now training with National League side Chesterfield.

JORDON IBE AND THE SUPER EAGLES

Following his breakthrough season at Liverpool FC in the 2014/2015 season, Jordon Ibe, then 20, was offered a chance to represent his fathers country Nigeria.

In Febuary 2015, the Nigeria Football Federation – NFF revealed it has approached the forward to discuss the possibility of him switching allegiance from England where he played for the Youth teams, to Nigeria..

By August same year, then Nigeria head coach Sunday Oliseh made a personal appeal to Ibe in an attempt to convince him to play for the Super Eagles but the player instead was clear his future was with England.

Again in 2017, while the Genot Rohr prepared for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Jordon Ibe was again approached to play for Nigeria but there was no changing of plans.

Caretaker thinks playing for the Super Eagles would have helped build Jordon Ibe’s rising profile, as a full international with the platform to soar on the International stage at a time he was one of the hottest wingers in the Premier League.

WHAT NEXT FOR JORDAN IBE

Whether his current association with 5th tier club Chesterfield ends with the training or a deal is done to see him join the club, Ibe is currently a long way-off the talented winger that Nigeria once craved.
