José Peseiro reacts to Nigeria AFCON 2021 Round 16 exit
Portuguese manager José Peseiro has reacted to the shocking round of 16 exit of the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria were one of the favourites going into the competition, they became most pundits and punters favourites after their impressive 1-0 opener win against Egypt.
Nigeria dominated the game against Egpyt, destroyed Sudan in their second game, and made a light work of their last group game clash against Guinea-Bissau despite making nine changes.
But fell 1-0 to Tunisia in the Round of 16 tie to the surprise of many including José Peseiro who shared his opinion on the outcome in an interview with kingfut.
“The Africa Cup of Nations is a very strong competition between strong teams, including Nigeria, who were the best in the group stage, but after all, the four strongest teams throughout the tournament have reached the semi-finals,” the 61-year-old said.
“Egypt didn’t do well against Nigeria, but after that, they showed their true abilities, their players gave a great performance against Morocco, they have what it takes to win the tournament.”
The former Porto manager was appointed the Super Eagles manager before the start of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations shortly after Gernot Rohr was sacked.
Despite the announcement, there seems to be uncertainty over his appointment as it looks like the Federation is going the Augustine Eguavoen way.
Austin Eguavien is currently the technical director of the team and was the interim coach to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
