Kelechi Iheanacho Scores First Goal for Middlesbrough in 2-1 Win Over Oxford United
Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho has scored his first goal for Middlesbrough, helping them secure a 2-1 home win against Oxford United in the English Championship.
Iheanacho equalised in the 48th minute, finishing off a low cross from Sam Iling-Junior after Oxford had taken the lead just 10 minutes earlier. The goal was an emotional moment for the 28-year-old, as it was his first goal since December 2024.
Middlesbrough’s Playoff Hopes Stay Alive
The win keeps Middlesbrough in the race for promotion. They now have 57 points from 39 matches, the same as West Bromwich Albion, who occupy the last playoff spot in sixth place.
Carrick Praises Iheanacho
Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick was pleased with Iheanacho’s performance and believes this goal could boost his confidence.
“He’s a good player, experienced, and I’m sure he was frustrated after hitting the crossbar in the first half. But that’s football,” Carrick said after the match.
“He got his reward for working hard, and this goal will give him a big lift. We weren’t worried because we knew he would score, and we believe he has more goals in him.”
Iheanacho joined Middlesbrough on loan from Sevilla in January but had struggled to find the back of the net before this game. This was also his first league goal in two years across different competitions.
With this breakthrough, Middlesbrough will hope Iheanacho can score more goals as they push for a playoff spot and fight for promotion to the Premier League.
