Kelechi Nwakali Joins Barnsley on a Three-Year Deal from Chaves
Nigerian international Kelechi Nwakali has completed a move to League One side Barnsley, leaving behind Portugal’s Chaves for England’s third tier.
The 26-year-old midfielder, who first made a name for himself with Arsenal and won the Golden Ball at the 2015 U17 World Cup, has signed a three-year deal with the Tykes.
Nwakali’s transfer follows a period of disciplinary issues at Chaves, prompting his decision to embark on a new chapter in his career. Barnsley, known for their home at the iconic Oakwell Stadium, announced the signing with enthusiasm, although the fee for the transfer remains undisclosed.
“Barnsley Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of Nigerian International midfielder Kelechi Nwakali from G.D Chaves for an undisclosed fee, subject to visa and international clearance,” the club stated on their social media channels.
Nwakali, who has had various loan spells across Europe, made a permanent move to Spain’s La Liga in 2019, joining Huesca. He has also played for Alcorcón and Ponferradina. Now, he is focused on making an impact in English football.
Speaking about his move, Nwakali said, “In my career, I need to prove a point again. Coming here, it’s time to prove myself to the world and have an impact on the club.” Known for his vision, passing range, and dribbling ability, Nwakali is expected to add creativity to Barnsley’s midfield as they aim for promotion this season.
As Nwakali trades the sunny shores of Portugal for the rugged terrain of Yorkshire, he hopes to reignite his career and become the next Nigerian star to make his mark in English football.
