Kenya Goalkeeper Patrick Matasi Suspended Amid Match-Fixing Investigation
Kenyan goalkeeper Patrick Matasi has been temporarily suspended from all football activities in the country for 90 days while authorities investigate allegations of match-fixing.
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) announced the suspension on Thursday, just hours after confirming an inquiry into the 37-year-old.
The case emerged after a video shared online appeared to show Matasi agreeing to influence the outcome of a match. However, the video is undated, and the BBC has not been able to verify its authenticity.
Matasi, who plays for Kenyan Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz and has over 30 international caps, has not responded to requests for comment.
His club’s owner, Cleophas Shimanyula, defended the goalkeeper, stating that Matasi was shocked by the footage.
“He told me he has no involvement in match-fixing and does not know anything about it,” Shimanyula told BBC Sport Africa. “Kakamega Homeboyz strongly opposes any form of match manipulation.”
Matasi last played for Kenya in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Cameroon last October, where the Harambee Stars lost 4-1.
The FKF has said it will cooperate with FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and other relevant authorities during the investigation.
