Kerr edging closer to Warriors return

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr took charge of practice in the absence of Luke Walton on Tuesday, but the championship-winning boss is still not ready to make a comeback.

Kerr has not led the NBA champions in 2015-16, sidelined as he recovers from multiple off-season back surgeries and complications, but he stepped in for interim coach Luke Walton, who was sick on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old, who said Walton will return on Wednesday, was happy to take to the court but insisted it is too early for a return.

“I felt pretty good, but I’m not 100 per cent health wise,” Kerr told reporters.

“But I’m getting better, building some strength. Today was a good day.”

Kerr, whose Warriors boast a 26-1 win-loss record after making the best start in NBA history under Walton, added: “This has been a really good week. That’s the main thing. I have to keep that going.

“I’m confident I’ll be back on the bench. I wouldn’t be here talking to you if I didn’t. I wouldn’t have been here the last nine days or whatever it’s been. Things are moving in the right direction.”
