Klopp on Salah’s decision to attend his brother’s wedding
Jurgen Klopp has refused to categorically rule Mohamed Salah out of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Leicester City, despite his star forward testing positive for coronavirus during the international break.
Salah has tested positive shortly after he was he was filmed without a facemask and not socially distancing at his brother’s wedding in Cairo last week.
The 28-year-old subsequently recorded a second positive test earlier this week but is due back on Merseyside this afternoon.
While Arsenal have ruled Salah’s international team-mate Mohamed Elneny, who also contracted the disease, out of Sunday’s match against Leeds, Liverpool are yet to provide a definitive update on the former Chelsea star.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Klopp said: ‘He is flying back today. I’ve been in close contact with him. When you have a negative test, the process starts. He has had no symptoms. Nothing to say in public about the situation.
‘A brother’s wedding is a very special moment. What I can say about my players: they are incredibly disciplined, all. But sometimes it doesn’t work out like this and something happens. All the rest is between Mo and me. We are fine.’
Klopp’s Premier League champions trail table-topping Leicester by a solitary point ahead of Sunday’s trip to the King Power stadium and the Liverpool boss isn’t surprised the Foxes continue to improve under a Brendan Rodgers side which can still count on the goals of Jamie Vardy.
He said: ‘They showed it last year how good they can be. Changed styles slightly. Dealt really well with injuries. Good example how to deal with injury crisis. A clear way of how they want to play. They are contenders for everything. On what makes Vardy such a tough player to defend against, he added: ‘His speed! It’s incredible how he uses that. He is a massive threat. He gambles in a good way with the last line. His technical level is really good as well. Jamie is a proper, proper player. It’s always a challenge to defend him.’
