Knicks Stage Big Comeback to Beat Pistons in Game 1
The Detroit Pistons looked ready to cause an upset on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, but the experienced New York Knicks came back strong to win 123-112 and take a 1-0 lead in their playoff series.
The Pistons, playing in their first playoff game since 2019, were in control for most of the game thanks to sharp three-point shooting and 22 first-half points from Tobias Harris. They led 98-90 heading into the fourth quarter.
However, the start of the fourth quarter went badly for Detroit. They gave away possession twice — once for taking too long to pass the ball in, and once for not taking a shot in time. That opened the door for the Knicks.
New York’s experienced players, including Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Cameron Payne, took over the game. Payne started a huge 21-0 scoring run with a strong finish and a free throw. By the time Josh Hart scored to end the run with under five minutes left, the Knicks were up 111-98. The Pistons couldn’t recover.
Malik Beasley finally hit a three-pointer to stop the Knicks’ run, but it was too late. A nine-point Pistons lead had turned into a 10-point deficit, and the Knicks saw out the final minutes comfortably.
Brunson Shines Despite Injury Concern
Jalen Brunson briefly left the game after a knock to his ankle, but he returned to help spark the comeback. He finished with a game-high 34 points and eight assists.
Karl-Anthony Towns had an all-around strong game with 23 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, four steals, and two blocks. OG Anunoby added 23 points and seven rebounds, while Payne scored 14 points off the bench.
Pistons’ Young Stars Face Big Test
The Pistons, who were the worst team in the NBA last season, made the playoffs as the No. 6 seed. They are led by young talents like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, and Ausar Thompson, all under 23 and playing in their first playoff game.
On the night, veterans Harris (25 points) and Beasley (20 points) carried much of the load. Cunningham scored 21 points but struggled with his shooting, making only 8 of 21 attempts.
The young Pistons will need to bounce back quickly as they prepare for Game 2 on Monday.
