Lampard Hails Onyeka After Coventry City Victory Over Derby
Coventry City manager Frank Lampard could not hide his admiration for Frank Onyeka after the Super Eagles midfielder’s stunning goal helped the Sky Blues to a thrilling 3-2 win over Derby County on Friday night.
Onyeka, on loan from Brentford, opened the scoring with a powerful strike that set the tone for an entertaining and tense match. Derby fought back through Ben Brereton Díaz, who scored twice, but Jack Rudoni’s brace secured all three points for Coventry.
The win keeps Coventry at the top of the Championship and puts them on course for a return to the Premier League. With only a few games remaining, Lampard’s side are now strong favourites for promotion.
Since joining in January, Onyeka has played a crucial role in Coventry’s success. The team has won eight of the nine games he has featured in. Lampard praised his energy, strength, and discipline in midfield.
Lampard said after the game, “The work he does for the goal is exactly what he has been doing for us — breaking up play. But there’s more to his game. The physical part is one thing, but he can shoot as well. All round, he’s a quality player and an amazing lad. He comes from the Premier League with incredible humility. He just works hard. He’s such a lovely bloke and I’m delighted for him. This place adores him already.”
Lampard also highlighted Onyeka’s personal sacrifices since joining Coventry. “When someone comes in from the Premier League, and he’s just so diligent. He had a baby when he first came in, he’s staying in hotels, not seen his family. I said, ‘I haven’t seen you,’ and he said, ‘No, I need to be here.’ All those little things, and the way he trains and prepares, that sends massive signals to the rest of the players. But the first thing is, can you do it on the pitch? And he clearly has.”
Onyeka’s growing importance could have long-term consequences for his future. His loan deal includes a clause that could make the move permanent if Coventry secure promotion. With the club leading the table, that prospect is becoming increasingly realistic.
For now, both Onyeka and Coventry City remain focused on their next match against Hull City, but momentum, form, and belief suggest they are edging closer to a Premier League return — and Onyeka may soon make his stay in Coventry a permanent one.
