Lampard named new City manager
Frank Lampard has been named the new manager of Coventry City, a club in England’s Championship league. The former England star hopes to rebuild his coaching career after a tough time in his previous roles.
Lampard, 46, has been out of work since serving as interim manager at Chelsea during the final months of the 2022/23 season. Coventry, currently in 17th place in the Championship, recently sacked Mark Robins, who took them to the FA Cup semi-finals last season.
Lampard has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract and will lead the team for the first time in a home game against Cardiff City on Saturday.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Frank Lampard as our new head coach,” said Coventry’s owner, Doug King. “Frank has experience in the Championship and knows what it takes to succeed in this league. His time at Chelsea and Everton will also bring valuable insights to help our talented squad as we aim for the top level.”
Lampard, Chelsea’s all-time top scorer, has found management challenging compared to his successful playing career. He had a good start as Derby County manager in the Championship, which earned him the Chelsea job in 2019. However, he was let go after 18 months when the team was ninth in the Premier League. His replacement, Thomas Tuchel, went on to win the Champions League with Chelsea later that year.
Lampard also managed Everton but was dismissed after one year in 2023. He briefly returned to Chelsea as interim boss but won only one of 11 matches, with the team finishing 12th in the Premier League.
