Leon Balogun Open to Saudi Pro League Move as Contract Nears Expiry
Nigeria and Rangers defender Leon Balogun has said he is open to a move to the Saudi Pro League when his contract expires this summer.
The 36-year-old has played more minutes for Rangers this season than he did throughout the last campaign, proving his importance to Philippe Clement’s squad. He has featured in 19 games across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing an assist.
When asked about the possibility of joining the Saudi Pro League, Balogun admitted that many factors would influence his decision but did not rule out playing in the Middle East.
“I won’t run away from it. If the right offer comes and it benefits not just me but those around me, then I will consider it. But for now, it hasn’t come up,” Balogun said in an interview with Ay Suga Naija Lifestyle.
“I like to be straightforward, and obviously, money plays a big role in these discussions. Last year, there was a rush of players going there, and they are trying to build something over the next five or six years to make the league more attractive,” he added.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion defender also acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s efforts to improve their league, saying they are taking a long-term approach rather than trying to compete with the Premier League.
“They are aware of how important money is, and they are using it wisely. If I were them, I would do the same,” Balogun concluded.
Hopes for Super Eagles Return
Balogun, who last played for Nigeria in June 2022, has earned 46 caps for the Super Eagles since making his debut in 2014. He has expressed his desire to return to the national team as they prepare for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria will face Rwanda on 19th March before returning home to play Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on 22nd March.
