Liverpool and Manchester City played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Anfield on matchday seven of the English Premier League, with all four goals coming in the second half of the encounter.
Liverpool came into the game flying high after an impressive 5-1 victory over FC Porto in the Champions League, while Manchester City suffered a 2-0 defeat against Paris Saint Germain and were looking for a response against a direct title rival.
Manchester City and Liverpool exchanged blows in the opening exchanges, with Phil Foden drawing a smart stop from Alisson in the Liverpool goal, and Kevin De Bruyne spurning an excellent chance to put his side ahead. The home side struggled to get going and created no real chances of note until the whistle went for halftime.
Liverpool came out for the second half flying and managed to open the scoring just before the hour mark through Senegalese forward Sadio Mane. Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah split the Manchester City defence with a brilliant pass that put Mane through, and the forward made no mistake to put Liverpool in front after 59 minutes.
Manchester City would not stay down for long as Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus played a pivotal role down the right flank and set up youngster Phil Foden to equalise for the champions only ten minutes later.
Mohamed Salah turned up with a sensational solo effort in the 76th minute to restore Liverpool’s lead in style. The Egyptian received the ball from youngster Curtis Jones outside the Manchester City box before jinking and manipulating his way past a horde of opposition players to rifle home a right-footed effort from a tight angle.
Kevin De Bruyne would not allow Salah and Liverpool have the final say in the match as he slammed home a finish with the aid of a deflection only five minutes later to draw Manchester City level for the second time in the match as both sides settled for a draw.
Liverpool maintained their unbeaten start to the season with the result and go into the international break in second place on the English Premier League standings behind Chelsea, while Manchester City are one place and one point behind in third place.
