Liverpool have taken a huge step towards winning the Premier League title after a convincing 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The win has increased their lead at the top of the table to 11 points.
Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead in the 14th minute with a close-range shot that deflected off Nathan Ake. Salah then turned provider in the 37th minute, setting up Dominik Szoboszlai, whose shot wrong-footed City goalkeeper Ederson to double Liverpool’s lead.
City, who have won the league for the last four years, now find themselves 20 points behind the leaders in fourth place, with only 11 games remaining.
Salah, who was named Player of the Match, continued his brilliant form, scoring his 26th goal and providing his 17th assist of the season. The 32-year-old forward’s clinical finish for the first goal and key assist for Szoboszlai were vital in securing the three points. Though his influence faded slightly after half-time, Salah’s presence kept Manchester City’s defence on edge throughout the match.
If Liverpool do go on to win the Premier League this season, Salah’s performances will be remembered as one of the best in the competition’s history.
For Manchester City, it was another tough night. Despite new signing Omar Marmoush showing promise since his arrival in January, the team is still in a period of transition. While City will no doubt bounce back in future seasons, this loss leaves them with plenty to work on.
Liverpool’s 11-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal, who still have a game in hand, puts them in a strong position. With seven of their remaining 11 league matches to be played at Anfield, Liverpool are in pole position to clinch their first Premier League title under manager Arne Slot.
The victory over City has left many believing that the Premier League crown is heading to Anfield in May.
