Liverpool secured a place in the final of the English League Cup with an impressive 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, keeping their hopes of a historic quadruple alive.
Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Virgil van Dijk all scored at Anfield, overturning Tottenham’s 1-0 lead from the first leg of the semifinal to win 4-1 on aggregate. The victory sends Liverpool through to face Newcastle in the final at Wembley on March 16, with the chance to defend the trophy they won last year.
The win is part of an exceptional season for Liverpool, who are chasing multiple trophies under manager Jürgen Klopp. For Tottenham, this heavy defeat adds to the pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou, with Spurs sitting 14th in the Premier League and struggling in all competitions.
Tottenham had hoped the League Cup could offer a chance for their first trophy since 2008, but Liverpool were dominant. Gakpo’s first-time strike in the 34th minute levelled the tie on aggregate, and after the break, Liverpool took complete control. Salah scored from the penalty spot in the 51st minute after Darwin Nunez was fouled by Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Szoboszlai added a third with a low finish in the 75th minute, and Van Dijk sealed the win with a header from a corner in the 80th minute.
Liverpool’s victory shows their strength as they continue their push for multiple trophies this season, while Tottenham will be left to reflect on a disappointing result.
In the final, Liverpool will face Newcastle, who are aiming to end a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. Their last major win was in 1969, but a 4-0 aggregate victory over Arsenal in the semifinals shows they are a strong team under manager Eddie Howe.
