EPL champions, Liverpool were handed a thrashing by league leaders, Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday with the match ending 4-1 in favour of the visitors. German midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan scored the opening goal, before Liverpool equalised through Mohamed Salah from the spot. Gundogan scored another goal to give City the lead before errors from Allison gifted first Raheem Sterling, then Phil Foden goals for Manchester City.
The game was Liverpool’s third consecutive home defeat in the English Premier League this season. Liverpool had gone on a club record unbeaten home run of 68 matches before Burnley ended their run with a 1-0 win at Anfield on the 21st of January 2021. Burnley seemed to take along with it the Anfield mojo as Liverpool have scored a grand total of 1 goal in 3 home matches since, losing all 3 to Burnley, Brighton and Manchester City by a combined scoreline of 6-1. This run may be attributed to Liverpool’s defensive woes, as all of their first team central defenders have picked up season ending injuries, and they have been forced to shuffle Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, both midfielders to fill in at Central defence for them.
This run of poor form has more than ended Liverpool’s hopes of retaining the EPL title, as they find themselves 10 points behind leaders, Manchester City, having played more games this season.
Liverpool’s last three games at Anfield:
Liverpool 0-1 Burnley
Liverpool 0-1 Brighton
Liverpool 1-4 Man City
0 Wins, 3 Defeats
Just 1 Goal Scored & 6 Conceded.
