Lobi Stars crash out of CAF Champions League after 3-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns
Lobi Stars are out of this year’s CAF Champions League after they were defeated 3-0 by hosts Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa on Saturday.
The Nigerian champions are bottom of their group with four points from five matches with their final group game being against third-placed ASEC Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire, who have seven points and a better goals difference.
Mamelodi Sundowns are through to the quarterfinals having already recorded 10 points, while Wydad Casablanca of Morocco are second on seven points.
Lobi Stars let in three goals in the first half on Saturday night in Pretoria.
The home team raced into a 1-0 lead after just two minutes through Thapelo Morena, before they doubled their advantage in the 38th minute through Themba Zwane. The Brazilians scored the third goal in the 39th minute through Lebohang Maboe.
There were no goals in recorded in the second 45 minutes of the game as Lobi Stars locked it up. One wonders why the Nigerian champions failed to do that in the first half.
