Lookman Responds to Gasperini’s “Disrespectful” Comments After Champions League Exit
Ademola Lookman has hit back at Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini, calling his comments “deeply disrespectful” after the winger’s penalty miss in the Champions League knockout against Club Brugge.
Lookman, returning from injury, was brought on as a substitute at half-time with Atalanta already 5-1 down on aggregate. Within just 36 seconds, the Nigerian forward pulled a goal back, but the moment that captured attention came later in the match when Atalanta were awarded a penalty.
Lookman controversially took the ball away from designated penalty takers Charles De Ketelaere and Mateo Retegui. His penalty was saved by Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, and following the 5-2 aggregate defeat, Gasperini publicly criticised the winger.
“He is one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen,” Gasperini said after the game. “He has a terrible record, even in training, and converts very few of them. Retegui and De Ketelaere were there, but Lookman, in a moment of enthusiasm, decided to take the ball, and I didn’t appreciate that at all.”
In response, Lookman released a statement on social media expressing his disappointment. “It saddens me on a day like this to have to write this statement, especially because of what we have achieved together as a team and as a city,” Lookman wrote. “Being singled out in the manner I have been feels deeply disrespectful, not least because of the immense hard work and commitment I have always put in to help bring success to this club and to the incredible fans of Bergamo.”
Lookman continued, explaining that the penalty incident had been a moment of responsibility and team support. “During the match, the designated penalty taker instructed me to take the penalty, and to support the team, I took responsibility in that moment to do so,” he said. “Life’s about challenges and turning pain into power, which I’ll continue to do.”
The comments from Lookman show the tension between player and manager, especially after the winger’s crucial return from injury, which had helped Atalanta in their efforts to turn the tie around. Despite the setback in the Champions League, Lookman remains focused on overcoming challenges and continuing to support his team, but it’s clear that Gasperini’s public remarks have left him hurt and disappointed.
