MacManaman Overlooks Nunez in Naming Liverpool’s Best Performer in Brentford Win
Despite scoring twice to secure a dramatic 2-0 win for Liverpool against Brentford, former Reds player Steve MacManaman did not name Darwin Nunez as the best performer on the pitch.
Nunez’s late goals gave Liverpool an important victory in their Premier League clash, but MacManaman praised Trent Alexander-Arnold as the standout player.
While Liverpool controlled possession and created plenty of chances, it seemed they might leave with a frustrating draw. However, Nunez broke the deadlock in the 84th minute, tapping in a cross from Alexander-Arnold. He then sealed the win with a second goal in stoppage time following a quick counter-attack.
Although Nunez was the match-winner with his brace, MacManaman chose Alexander-Arnold as “by far the best player on the pitch” for his vital contributions, including the assist for Nunez’s first goal. MacManaman also praised Liverpool manager Arne Slot for his tactical substitutions during the match.
“Injury time winners feel sweeter, and Darwin Nunez is never far from the headlines,” MacManaman said. “Arne Slot deserves a lot of credit for his substitutions, and Trent Alexander-Arnold was by far the best player on the pitch today.”
Liverpool’s 2-0 win extended their unbeaten away run to 11 league matches, while Brentford’s winless streak at home reached five games.
Liverpool now sit seven points ahead of Arsenal before their next match against Ipswich on January 25.
