Major blow for Super Eagles following Semi Ajayi injury update
The Super Eagles’ AFCON 2025 qualification campaign has suffered a major blow with the news that key defender Semi Ajayi is set for an extended absence due to a severe hamstring injury.
The 30-year-old West Bromwich Albion centre-back sustained the injury during the second half of his club’s recent match against Cardiff City and will require surgery, sidelining him for approximately four months.
Ajayi’s absence is a setback for interim Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen, who was counting on Ajayi’s experience and defensive consistency as Nigeria pushes to secure qualification next month. West Brom manager Carlos Corberan confirmed the extent of the injury, describing it as “difficult” and “unfortunate,” with surgery deemed necessary to avoid re-injury. “Semi has suffered a more difficult injury,” Corberan stated, adding that Ajayi’s hamstring was “broken in two parts.”
The timing of Ajayi’s injury is especially challenging for Nigeria, as Eguavoen has also lost another defensive option, Olisa Ndah, to injury. Despite limited playing time in Nigeria’s recent international matches, Ajayi has been an integral figure in Eguavoen’s plans, boasting 39 international appearances for the Super Eagles.
Ajayi’s absence also impacts West Brom’s aspirations for promotion in the English Championship, leaving Corberan with a critical gap in his backline. As both Nigeria and West Brom adjust their tactical setups, Ajayi begins a determined journey to recovery.
