Manchester City retained the English Premier League title after a brilliant comeback saw them come from 2-0 down to defeat Aston Villa 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium, sealing their fourth title in five years.
Manchester City needed to win to secure the league title but were left stunned as Aston Villa took a shock lead through a Matty Cash header in the 37th minute. The Villans looked set to ruin City’s party as they added a second in the 69th minute through Phillipe Coutinho.
Manchester City started their comeback in the 76th minute as the departing Ilkay Gundogan pulled a goal back for the champions. Two minutes later, Spanish midfielder Rodri stroked an effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to pull his side level before Gundogan sealed his brace with a tap-in at the far post after he was found by Kevin De Bruyne in the 81st minute. The Cityzens held on for the final minutes to secure back-to-back league titles.
Liverpool fell short on the final day of the season despite securing a 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers from behind. Wolves took an early lead after only three minutes through Pedro Neto, before Sadio Mane equalised for Liverpool in the 24th minute.
With the game seemingly headed for a stalemate, Liverpool took the lead through Mohamed Salah, with the Egyptian forward bundling home his 23rd league goal of the season in the 84th minute. Andy Robertson added a third for the Reds five minutes later to help them end their league season in the best possible way.
Liverpool failed to overtake Manchester City in the league standings and have seen their bid for a quadruple end at the hands of their bitter rivals.
Alisson ended the season with the league’s Golden Glove award, which he shared with Manchester City’s Ederson. Salah claimed the league’s Golden Boot alongside Tottenham star Heung Min-Son.
