Manchester United eye Raheem Sterling amid Chelsea squad shake-up

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to make a dramatic move for Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling as they look to strengthen their squad.

According to recent reports, Manchester United’s sporting director Dan Ashworth has initiated contact with Chelsea regarding the potential signing of the England international forward.

Sterling, 29, has found himself on the periphery of Chelsea’s plans under new manager Enzo Maresca. The Chelsea boss has publicly stated that Sterling is no longer a part of his immediate plans, and it appears the club is keen on offloading the winger to reduce their over-bloated squad. As part of this process, Sterling has been removed from the squad dynamics and has even had his squad number reassigned to new signing Pedro Neto.

Since joining Chelsea in 2022 from Manchester City, Sterling has struggled to find consistent form, and his future at Stamford Bridge looks uncertain. The winger’s current £300,000-per-week salary poses a challenge for potential suitors, including Manchester United, who would need Sterling to accept a pay cut for the move to be feasible.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are exploring ways to resolve their own squad issues. The club has been dealing with a contentious situation involving Jadon Sancho. Although Erik ten Hag has stated that his dispute with Sancho has been resolved, both player and club are still seeking a resolution that may see the former Manchester City winger depart Old Trafford.

In a twist, it has been suggested that Manchester United could propose a swap deal involving Sterling and Sancho. The Telegraph reported that Ashworth contacted Chelsea with this potential arrangement, aiming to exchange the two wingers. However, the specifics of the deal remain to be seen, and negotiations are likely to involve complex considerations, including Sterling’s substantial wages.

As the transfer window progresses, all eyes will be on whether Manchester United and Chelsea can agree on a deal that satisfies both parties. If successful, Sterling’s move to Manchester United could be a significant addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad, provided the financial terms are adjusted to fit the club’s budget.
