Marcelo Announces Retirement After Glorious 20-Year Career

Marcelo, the legendary left-back for Real Madrid and Brazil, has officially retired from professional football at the age of 36.

The Brazilian’s career has been truly remarkable, winning five Champions League titles and six La Liga trophies with Real Madrid. After leaving Madrid in 2022, following their Champions League victory, Marcelo had a short time at Olympiacos in Greece, before returning to Fluminense, the club where he started his career.

Marcelo’s return to Fluminense was historic, as he played a key role in their Copa Libertadores win in 2023. However, his second spell at the club ended in November 2024 after a disagreement with coach Mano Menezes during a heated match against Gremio.

In an emotional video posted on social media, Marcelo thanked everyone for their support and shared his pride in his career. “At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door, and I arrived here. Now, I can proudly say that I am a true Madridista. I have spent 16 seasons here, won 25 titles, including five Champions Leagues, and had so many magical nights at the Bernabeu. My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football. Thank you for everything.”

Marcelo made history in 2021-2022 when he became the first non-Spanish player to captain Real Madrid since 1904. That season, he led the team to another Champions League title, marking a perfect end to his time at the club.

On the international stage, Marcelo earned 58 caps for Brazil and scored six goals. Although he never won a World Cup, he was part of the team that won the 2013 Confederations Cup. He also represented Brazil at the Olympics, earning a bronze medal in 2008 and a silver in 2012.

With his playing career now finished, Marcelo’s next steps are unclear. However, his statement that he still has “much to give to football” suggests he may move into coaching or club management in the future.
