Marcelo leaves Fluminense after clash with Coach

Brazilian football star Marcelo, who once played for Real Madrid, has parted ways with Fluminense by mutual agreement. The club announced his departure on Saturday but did not explain the exact reason for ending his contract.

Sources suggest that Marcelo’s exit is linked to a disagreement with Fluminense’s coach, Mano Menezes, during a recent match. In the 2-2 draw against Gremio at the Maracana Stadium, Marcelo was about to enter the game as a substitute when a conflict arose. Menezes reportedly changed his mind after Marcelo said something that did not sit well with him.

“I was going to bring Marcelo on, but I heard something I didn’t like, so I decided not to,” Menezes explained after the match, though he did not give more details.

Marcelo, who spent 15 successful years with Real Madrid and won 25 trophies, began his career at Fluminense. After a brief spell in Greece with Olympiakos, he returned to Fluminense in early 2023. In recognition of his career, the club had even renamed their training centre stadium after him just two months ago.

Fluminense’s statement expressed gratitude toward Marcelo, saying, “The connection between Fluminense and Marcelo remains strong. We thank Marcelo and will continue to support him in his future challenges.”
