Maresca reveals winning ambition after getting strong words form Mikel Obi
Chelsea legend Mikel Obi had strongly criticised Blues boss Enzo Maresca after watching his former club suffer a heavy defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. Mikel, who played for Chelsea and helped them win the 2012 UEFA Champions League, expressed his frustration on his podcast about Chelsea’s poor form, especially after the 3-0 loss to Brighton.
Mikel’s comments came after Chelsea dropped to sixth in the Premier League, just days after being knocked out of a cup competition by the Seagulls. Mikel was clear in his thoughts, saying, “That would have been a crisis back in the day. The helicopter would have been, surely, landing by now.” While he stopped short of calling for Maresca’s sacking, Mikel stated that the current situation is unacceptable.
Mikel warned that missing out on a Champions League spot would be a disaster for Chelsea, and he also criticised Maresca’s earlier remarks about the club not being title contenders, suggesting this has affected the players’ mindset.
In response, Maresca addressed the comments, saying, “Since day one I joined this club, my intention is to win games, to win titles, and to bring this club to where it deserves to be.” He acknowledged the pressure of managing a big club like Chelsea but emphasised his commitment to success.
Maresca added, “When you win, you look humble. When you don’t win, you look like you lack ambition. I am ambitious; the club is ambitious.” He wants to build a winning mentality within the team, despite the challenges they face.
Mikel’s strong words have struck a chord with many Chelsea fans who are disappointed by the club’s fall from title challengers to mid-table performers. His passion for the club is clear as he urges fans not to accept mediocrity and calls for a return to Chelsea’s winning ways. With growing pressure on Maresca, expectations from fans and former players are high as Chelsea looks to bounce back in the Premier League.
