Mason Greenwood looks past United era in first interview as Marseille player

Mason Greenwood, the former Manchester United striker, has secured a permanent move to French club Olympique de Marseille, aiming to rebuild his reputation both on and off the field.

After an impressive campaign at Getafe, Greenwood has opted to leave Old Trafford and start anew in Ligue 1.

During his introductory press conference at Marseille, Mason Greenwood chose not to address the controversies surrounding his past, specifically the allegations of assault made against him. Instead, he emphasised his desire to focus on his future with the club and his personal life.

Greenwood stated, “I understand the question, but I don’t really want to get into any conversations or discussions about that. I’d only like to look forward and to be part of Marseille and just to move forward with myself, my family, my daughter and my partner and the whole club and to focus on the football and the off-field work with my family.”

The allegations against Greenwood were dropped in February 2023, but they continue to cast a shadow over his career. Despite this, Greenwood is determined to concentrate on his football at Marseille.

His transfer has elicited mixed reactions. Some fans appreciate his talent, while others, including Marseille’s Mayor, have condemned the signing due to the unresolved allegations. Nevertheless, Greenwood’s deflection from the controversy highlights his intention to prioritize his football career.

Greenwood’s arrival at Marseille comes as the club looks to strengthen its squad. He could make his debut in Marseille’s first friendly of the season against Nimes on Sunday. As he joins the team, Greenwood aims to contribute significantly and leave his past controversies behind, focusing on his new journey in French football.
