Mathias Pogba sentenced to 3 years for extorting brother Paul Pogba
Mathias Pogba, the brother of World Cup winner Paul Pogba, has been sentenced to three years in prison for his role in an extortion scheme targeting his sibling. The court in Paris also decided that Mathias would serve one year of his sentence under electronic monitoring, instead of being locked up.
The case began in March 2022 when Paul Pogba reported being kidnapped by armed men who demanded €13 million for “protection services.” Investigations revealed that Mathias and five others were behind the scheme, intimidating Paul by claiming he had abandoned them after becoming famous.
Mathias, a former footballer, had publicly accused Paul of using a witch doctor against Kylian Mbappe and neglecting his family, but Paul strongly denied these accusations.
Mathias was found guilty of organized extortion and attempted extortion. He was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended. The other members of the group received prison sentences ranging from four to eight years.
Mathias’s lawyer has said they plan to appeal the ruling, insisting that Mathias is innocent despite the conviction. In addition to his prison sentence, Mathias was fined €20,000.
