Maxim Van Gils withdraws from Tour de France due to COVID-19
Maxim Van Gils, a Belgian cyclist, has become the fourth rider to exit the Tour de France after testing positive for coronavirus.
His team, Lotto-Dstny, confirmed that Van Gils showed mild symptoms and tested positive on Monday, the designated rest day.
Maxim Van Gils joins Denmark’s Michael Mørkøv, Spain’s Juan Ayuso, and Britain’s Thomas Pidcock, who had previously left the Tour due to COVID-19.
Despite the infections, former Tour winner Geraint Thomas, who has also tested positive, continues to race, with the Tour set to conclude on Sunday.
COVID-19 tests are not mandatory for the Tour, and record stage winner Mark Cavendish revealed to German broadcaster ARD that several riders are continuing to compete despite positive tests.
