Medvedev on facing Sinner and Alcaraz: “You Can Win Some”
Speaking at the Australian Open press conference, Medvedev was asked whether players ranked No. 3 through No. 15 are competing at a similar level and what it would take for that group to consistently challenge the current no 1 and 2.
“Everyone can beat them on a given day,” Medvedev said. “I’m not shy to say that if I play 10 matches each with Carlos and Jannik, I’ll probably lose a lot of them.”
Medvedev acknowledged that Sinner and Alcaraz are operating at a higher level overall but rejected the idea that they are unbeatable.
“Jannik and Carlos, it’s tough. They just play better tennis than other guys,” he said. “But you can beat anyone on a given day.”
Using his own experience as an example, Medvedev explained that while long term consistency favors the top two, individual matches still offer opportunities.
“If I play 20 matches against Carlos and Jannik, let’s say 10 with each of them, I’ll probably lose a lot,” he said. “But I’m going to try my best in every one of them to win. Out of 10 matches, you can win some.”
Medvedev also pointed out that even the best players are not immune to off days.
“They can have a bit of an off day,” he said. “I did beat both of them in Grand Slams.”
