Mercedes has officially revealed its 2025 Formula 1 car ahead of the pre-season testing in Bahrain, marking a fresh chapter for the team as they enter their first season without seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
The British team unveiled the W16 digitally, just days after revealing its new livery at Formula 1’s season launch in London. The new season brings a change as 18-year-old rookie Kimi Antonelli replaces Hamilton, joining George Russell on the grid. Former Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, who raced for the team from 2017 to 2021, returns in a reserve role.
Mercedes Aiming for a Comeback
Mercedes, which dominated F1 with eight consecutive constructors’ titles from 2014 to 2021, showed signs of improvement in 2024 with four race wins, two for Russell and two for Hamilton. However, an inconsistent car meant the team finished fourth in the constructors’ standings, behind McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull.
Team principal Toto Wolff expects a highly competitive season ahead. “It is going to be a tough season,” he said. “Last year, the field was very close, and it was hard to predict who would be at the front. I expect this year to be even tighter. We need to be at our best if we want to challenge for the championships.”
Russell Ready to Lead
Wolff has confidence in George Russell, who has proven himself to be one of the best drivers on the grid. “George has shown he can compete for the drivers’ championship if we provide him with a car capable of doing so,” Wolff added.
Russell, 27, is looking forward to the new season, which will be his seventh in F1 and his fourth with Mercedes. “I believe last year was my strongest season in F1,” he said. “We are all motivated to build on last season’s performance.”
Antonelli’s Exciting Opportunity
At just 18, Kimi Antonelli is ready to start his F1 career. “It’s a great opportunity, and I’m grateful for the trust Mercedes has placed in me,” he said, looking forward to his first season.
Season Opener in Australia
