Messi Announces Arrival at 2026 World Cup with Stunning Goal for Argentina

Lionel Messi reminded the football world of his quality on Tuesday night as he scored a brilliant goal to give Argentina the lead against Algeria in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 38-year-old captain curled a superb effort into the top corner in the 17th minute to put the defending champions ahead in the Group J clash at Kansas City Stadium.
The goal came after a wonderful pass from Rodrigo De Paul, who picked out Messi between Algeria’s midfield and defence. The Argentine star drove forward before unleashing a powerful shot from outside the penalty area. Although goalkeeper Luca Zidane got a hand to the ball, he could not stop it from finding the back of the net.
It was another historic moment for Messi, who became the first player in football history to feature at six FIFA World Cups.
The match also marked his 200th appearance for Argentina, breaking a record previously shared by players including Cristiano Ronaldo, Lothar Matthäus, Antonio Carbajal, Andrés Guardado and Rafael Márquez.
Messi’s strike was his 14th goal at the World Cup and extended another remarkable record, making it five consecutive World Cup matches in which he has scored.
The Argentine captain thought he had opened the scoring much earlier. Just five minutes into the game, Lautaro Martínez set him up for a fine finish, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Algeria also had a goal disallowed in the eighth minute when Fares Chaibi beat goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, only for the assistant referee’s flag to deny the North Africans.
With both teams creating chances in an entertaining start, it was Messi who produced the first moment of magic to break the deadlock.
The goal was a reminder that despite being 38 years old, the Argentina legend remains capable of deciding matches on football’s biggest stage as he begins what could be his final World Cup campaign.
At the time of this report, the match is still ongoing, with Argentina holding a 1-0 lead thanks to another memorable goal from their captain.
