Messi Close to Signing New Inter Miami Contract

Lionel Messi is close to agreeing a new contract with Inter Miami, a club he joined after a turbulent time in France with PSG.

The Argentine star joined the club in July 2023 on a two-and-a-half-year deal, which is due to end later this year. Although no new deal was in place when the 2025 MLS season began, both sides are now close to reaching an agreement.

Per The Athletic, Messi is now expected to sign a contract extension with the club. The final details are still being discussed, but it is likely the new deal will see Messi play at Miami Freedom Park, Inter Miami’s new stadium, from next season.

Jorge Mas, one of Inter Miami’s co-owners, recently spoke about the situation on FDP Radio Miami.

“The stars are aligning for something great, for a beautiful future for the club and for Lionel. It’s solely his decision,” Mas said.
“I expect that within 60–90 days we’ll have to determine all of this. My hope has always been—and everything we’re doing—is to see Messi play at our new stadium in 2026. Hopefully, that happens.”

A new deal for Messi would be a big boost for both Inter Miami and Major League Soccer (MLS). At 37 years old, he is still the team’s best player and biggest attraction.

So far this season, Messi has scored eight goals in all competitions, including two in Inter Miami’s 3–1 win over LAFC in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals.

Messi has also broken two club records this season:

  • He became the fastest player in MLS history to reach 40 goal contributions.

  • He is now Inter Miami’s all-time leader in total goal contributions.

Despite all his personal achievements, Messi is focused on helping the team win more trophies. Since his arrival, Inter Miami have won the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, but they are still chasing their first MLS Cup title.

With Messi likely to stay, the dream of lifting the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy is very much alive for Inter Miami.
