Messi Scores Twice as Inter Miami Reach Playoffs

Lionel Messi scored a brace as Inter Miami beat New York City FC 4-0 on Wednesday night at Citi Field to book their place in the 2025 Major League Soccer playoffs.
The Inter Miami captain has now netted five goals in the last nine days. After scoring twice in the second half, he passed up the chance for a hat-trick by allowing Luis Suárez to take a late penalty.
Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, has scored two or more goals in eight of Miami’s last 12 matches, becoming only the fourth player in MLS history to achieve that in a single season.
Inter Miami are third in the Eastern Conference with 55 points from 29 games, two matches behind leaders Philadelphia Union. They face Toronto FC next on Saturday as Javier Mascherano’s side continue their push for the Supporters’ Shield.
