Mickelson to miss the only major title he’s yet to win for daughter´s graduation
Phil Mickelson has reportedly said he will miss this year’s U.S. Open – the only major tournament he has yet to win – in order to attend his daughter’s graduation.
Mickelson has won five major titles during his illustrious career, but the U.S. Open has proved painfully elusive, the left-hander registering six second-place finishes in the event.
It appears he will not break his duck at Erin Hills in 2017, due to the tournament’s first round on June 15 clashing with his daughter Amanda’s graduation from Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad, California.
The New York Times broke news of Mickelson’s apparent withdrawal on Saturday, quoting the 46-year-old as saying: “As I look back on life, this is a moment I’ll always cherish and be glad I was present. There’s no greater joy as a parent.”
A U.S. Open runner-up in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2013, Mickelson has featured in every edition of the championship since 1993.
His last tournament victory came at The Open four years ago, although he remains inside the top 25 of the world golf rankings.
