Mikel Obi Backs João Pedro as Chelsea’s Top Striker After Stunning Debut

Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder, Mikel Obi, has praised new signing João Pedro after his impressive performance in the Club World Cup semi-final. Pedro scored twice in Chelsea’s 3–0 win over Brazilian side Fluminense, showing he could be the club’s first-choice striker next season.

Mikel, who now works as a football pundit, said João Pedro’s form has pushed Nicolas Jackson down the pecking order. Jackson, who came on in the second half, missed a good chance to score.

Speaking to DAZN, Mikel said:

“Chelsea need strong competition for places. That’s what top clubs have. João Pedro and Liam Delap are doing really well, and Jackson now needs to prove himself.”

The Blues recently signed Delap from Ipswich Town and Pedro from Brighton. Mikel had earlier suggested that Chelsea should try to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, but with these new additions, the club may not need him.

Despite Jackson’s recent struggles, Mikel believes he can still have a role if he improves.

“He has talent, but he needs better focus and discipline. Right now, João and Delap are ahead of him,” Mikel added.

Chelsea will now prepare for the Club World Cup final on Sunday, where they will face either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
